From PM to ordinary people, UK commemorates Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday

From the Prime Minister to her grandson to those who might be referred to as commoners, the British are paying tribute Thursday to Queen Elizabeth II on her 90th birthday.

The Queen, Prime Minister David Cameron said, has been "a rock of strength for our nation" throughout her reign, the longest ever in British history. She ascended to the throne in 1952, shortly before her 26th birthday.

Though not a royalist, Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, said the Queen has carried out her duties over the years "with extraordinary warmth."

The Queen is celebrating her 90th birthday at Windsor Castle, west of London. She is unveiling a plaque marking the Queen's Walkway at the foot of Castle Hill, a long straight walkway that leads to the castle. And she and her husband, Prince Philip, who is 94, are on a "walkabout," greeting well-wishers.

I remember a visit to a notoriously posh part of Essex (which shall remain nameless) where people were utterly incredulous when I told them that nobody where I live had held any street parties when William & Kate got married.

Mind you, as I live somewhere that's quite hilly, I'm not sure that street parties would be 100% practical here, even if people did care much one way or the other.....
