Boost Win7 USB Transfer Rate by Increasing Maximum Transfer Size
http://mkdev.info/?tag=boost-windows-7-sp1-usb-storage-devices-performance-by-increasing-maximum-transfer-size-to-2mbJust tested several large files on Win 7 128gb SSD-to- 64gb Cruzer Glide stick and transfer rate (on average) practically doubled
According to Microsoft, deploying the KB 2581464 hotfix will introduce a new feature that enables you to update the maximum transfer size of USB storage devices in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2. After you install this update, you can increase the maximum transfer size from 64 kilobytes (KB) to 2 megabytes (MB) in the Usbstor.sys driver.
snip
Simply installing the hotfix wont do users much good. This because theyll actually need to increase the maximum transfer size of USB storage devices manually. Since this requires them to perform a small registry hack, my advice is to make sure and back-up first, as such tweaks are always risky. (emph mine)
Enabling write caching on USB devices helps also. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10392-write-caching-enable-disable.html

(3,270 posts)1. If you enable Write Caching...
Make sure you always use the Safely Eject Media option from the system tray.
It is really easy to corrupt your data if you normally just jerk your USB storage devices out of the port without ejecting first.

I'm kinda obsessive compulsive about using "safely-eject" so I didn't give it a thought.
