I have my computer on mute and when I go to Salon, it's ads turn on my sound agaiN

It is very annoying, I have the speakers away from me, don't want to have to walk across the room to turn off the speakers or to have to dig around behind the computer under the desk to pull the speaker plug.
why does this happen and how do I stop it?

the idea that advertisers can control a computer's sound.

You need a good ad blocker....Ghostery or Ad Guad or Ublock.
I prefer Ad Guard because it lets me choose which ads I want blocked, but it also includes a massive list of ads it automatically blocks.

Many sites set what are known as LSO cookies...Long term Storage cookies, which are not erased in the normal way.
So I use Better Privacy, an extension which kills them and keeps me from being tracked.

All of the above are available via FireFox Add Ons, just put them in Google and follow the results to the add on page.
You can always remove/disable them if you do not like them.

Will have to check it out when I get home. That is taking obnoxious to a while new level.

Did you turn the sound down in the taskbar or in the web browser?

Try it from the taskbar. I've never heard of programs being able to affect the Windows taskbar-volume control.

Also, if you just plug something into the headphone jack that should cut off your speakers.

All things considered, someone upthread suggested Ublock. That's the best advice.

Good luck!
