The United States once led the world in internet speed and infrastructure. Now, according to one estimate, it ranks at about 29. The infrastructure needed to provide our current national internet connectivity is massive. To upgrade it is extremely expensive. While I dont htink any of the big telcoms are really hurting I will say they pay through the nose.

3. We are rural

but not too far from a major hwy. Finally got DSL after suffering thru dial up and then satellite that really wasn't very good.

I know there are much faster services but I am thrilled with the DSL. When we lived down near Milw we had cable of course but up here it's a whole different story.
