How could I import playlists from my iPod back to my iTunes?

Okay, last week I decided that iTunes 11 sucked big time and DUers were able to point me to a link where I could download iTunes 10.7.

The problem, though, is that all of my playlists on my computer are gone. The playlist or whatever in version 11 was not backwards-compatable with version 10.


I have all of my playlists on my iPod Nano. All of the songs and podcasts that the playlists reference are still on my computer, and have been re-imported into iTunes. I just need the actual lists of songs moved from my iPod back to my iTunes. I want the playlists on my iPod to be copied to the "Playlists" navigation pane on iTunes.

Any ideas on this?

1. I answered my own question!

I plugged in the iPod, and unchecked the "automatic sync" feature on the setup page (first time I plugged in the iPod into this iTunes).

Then, when my iPod was in the left navigation pane, I simply expanded it, right-clicked on each playlist, and selected "export". I saved it to my desktop (a *.txt file). Then in iTunes, I clicked File -> Library -> Import Playlist.

3. I'm scared to plug the iPod in. I can't find any of my songs!

So a few updates ago, my music was lost on the computer. I had error messages next to the song titles saying itunes could not locate the songs. I never could figure out how to fix that. But my iPod had all the songs still on it so I just listened to what I already had. But I wanted to be able to add more songs!

Then my laptop died and I got a new one and forgot all about itunes.

Recently, like a month ago, I downloaded itunes on the newer laptop, authorized it, and ALL OF MY SONGS WERE BACK! I was so excited.

However, when I got ready to add more songs, EVERYTHING except a couple of ring tones and the pre-programmed songs was gone. I now have a total of 18 items and that's it. I tried reinstalling and get the same thing.

When I open itunes on the ipad, everything is there.

What the hell?

4. You might have two separate problems

The first sounds like your iTunes "forgot" where all the song files were located.

If that's true, you could have used the "Import files" feature to navigate your way to wherever you keep your songs so that iTunes is aware of them.



But your laptop is dead and gone, replaced with a new one.

So it sounds likes your iTunes-authorized laptop has a record of songs you've bought, and is showing you the songs you've purchased. However, it's possible that those songs have not been re-downloaded to your computer. You might need to do that.

I'm not sure what's going on with the iPad; I don't own one and have very little experience with them.


Caveat: I don't have my iTunes linked to a credit card or "authorized". I use it strictly for managing my free podcasts on my iPod. I'm just making wild-ass guesses here.

So, you got playlists in iPod and songs in computer, right?
I think I got a tool for you.

I used iOS Transfer to transfer music from iPod to Computer. It allows you to copy playlists as well.
You can also use iOS Transfer to manage data on iOS.

You can't do this with iTunes as it's one way sync. Instead, you can use other transfer app such as FoneTrans. It can transfer music from iPod to computer or iTunes. For iPod data transfer, I highly recommend using this app. It's a great iTunes alternatives.
