mozilla stopped working on home puter
For some crazy reason, Mozilla stopped loading. I wouldn't care, and could just go to google Chrome, but I have a bunch of bookmarks on mozilla that were critical to some projects.
I don't spose there is any way to retrieve?
Thanks in advance.

(18,482 posts)...by "stopped loading" do you mean web pages won't load or the program will not start?

On Windows hit WindowsKEY+R to open the Run... dialog box. Type/paste in %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ and click Okay. Open the profile folder with the word default in it. (See this for other operating systems.) There should a folder named bookmarkbackups inside that. Open it then copy and paste the most recent backup file to the desktop (or any other folder that is easy to work with).
Start IE or Chrome and either drag the backup file from the desktop or use the Open dialog (Ctrl+O) to view its contents. To make a new window/tab with a list of clickable links from that file (which you can open in a new tab and bookmark in whatever browser you are using), create and run a bookmarklet with the following code:
[div class="excerpt" style="word-wrap: break-word; margin-left: 1em; border: 1px solid #bfbfbf; border-radius: 0.4615em; box-shadow: 3px 3px 3px #999999;"]javascript:(function(){var%20ar1=document.body.outerHTML.split('{');var%20w=window.open();w.document.open("text/html" ;w.document.write('<!DOCTYPE%20html><html><body>');for(var%20cnt=0;cnt<ar1.length;cnt++){if(ar1[cnt].search('http')>0){var%20ar2=ar1[cnt].split('"');var%20ttl='';var%20uri='';for(var%20i=0;i<ar2.length;i++){if(ar2[i]=='title'){i=i+2;ttl=ar2[i];}else%20if(ar2[i]=='uri'){i=i+2;uri=ar2[i];}}if((ttl.length>0)&&(uri.length>0)){w.document.write('<a%20href="'+uri+'"%20target="_blank">'+ttl+'</a><br>'+'\n');}else%20if(uri.length>0){w.document.write('<a%20href="'+uri+'"%20target="_blank">'+uri+'</a><br>'+'\n');}}}w.document.write('</body>\n</html>');w.document.close();})()
To make bookmarklet, just create a bookmark on whatever page you have open and then go to its properties and give it an appropriate name, replace the URL with the javascript code above and click OK or Save or whatever your browser wants. To run it, just select it like you would any other bookmark.
I tested this using the bookmark file from FireFox17 and ran the bookmarklet in IE9 and Chrome24 - hopefully it will get most of the names of your bookmarks instead of just the URLs, but I only spent enough time on it to make the parsing work for simple bookmark info - it should get all the URLs that start with http though.

Thanks.

(8,543 posts)... before I put forth the minimal effort required to write a couple dozen lines of javascript.
Mine was more of a last resort kind of solution. Both Chrome and Opera have the ability to import FireFox bookmarks directly - I just kind of assumed you would have tried that before posting here, but obviously I should have asked since not everyone knows what features all the various browsers may have.
I hope you were able to retrieve everything you needed.
Peace,

(41,694 posts)You can find bookmarks by searching the C: drive for the file bookmarks.html

(41,694 posts)Best way to save your profile is MozBackup. Makes it easy to transfer to another computer, especially since I use SeaMonkey, Firefox and Thunderbird.

(3,554 posts)...the about:config setting browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML is set to false by default - Firefox creates bookmarks backups in .JSON format. If you change this setting to true, Firefox will start backing up bookmarks in .HTML format instead.

(21,152 posts)Usually, the problem is in the profile, Unfortunately, that's where you store the stuff you're wanting to save.
I am assuming you are using Vista, 7 or 8.
So First, do this. Open up windows explore. (the folder) find "Computer" and C: Highlight C: and look on the right panel for a folder named "users" Double-click it. When it opens you should see a folder with your user name. Double-click it.
You may or may not see a folder labeled AppData. If you do skip down to the next paragraph. If you do not, do the following. (I'll walk you through undoing this later--look for it at the bottom of the post.), click on "organize" at the upper left portion of the explorer window and select "folder and search options" from the menu that appears. Click on the "View" tab. in the window that appears. In the scroll box, look for "hidden Files and folders" Double click it and change the setting to "Show hidden files folders and drives" Click OK and you will now see the AppData folder.
Double click AppData. Double click Local. Double click Mozilla. right-click on Firefox and select rename, Change the name to Firefox.old. (This will regenerate and we will likely never need the backup we just created).
Click the back arrow (at the upper left of screen) twice (or until you see "Local" "LocalLow" and "Roaming" in the Folder list.) Double-click Roaming. Double click Mozilla. right-click on Firefox and select rename, Change the name to Firefox.old. (We Will be using this one--this is where everything you want to recover is stored along with what ever is messed up. Hopefully not much is included in both sets.)
When you next launch Firefox, it will think it is being launched by you for the first time.
If it does not launch, it is Firefox the application. Reinstall and launch it. If everything works, go back into windows explorer and navigate to C:\Users\<your Username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\ as you did earlier. Right Click on FireFox and choose rename. Change the name to Firefox.new. Right Click on FireFox.old and choose rename to Firefox. Launch, and everything should work. If you changed your AppData folder earlier and want to change it back, look to the bottom of this post.
If it launches, We'll see what we can salvage from the old profile. Exit Firefox. Go back into windows explorer and navigate to C:\Users\<your Username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\ as you did earlier. Right-click on Firefox and choose "open in new window." Drag the window to the left so it "snaps" Double click on Profiles. Double click on <gibberish>.default.
Drag your original windows explorer window (that has the firefox and firefox.old folders) and snap it on the right so the two windows are side by side. In the right screen, double-click on firefox.old. Double click on Profiles. Double click on <differentgibberish>.default. Still on the right side, find places.sqlite. right-click on it and chose "Copy" Now, right click on the left window and choose paste. When it asks overwrite the file (top option).
Launch firefox. Your book marks will be restored. If you want you can copy more and more to restore more of the profile (I'd start with the sqlite files.) It's probably an extension that killed you. If you plan to do that, please make a backup of the C:\Users\<your Username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox directory, first.
Close fire fox. If you want to re-hide "AppData" close one of the explorer windows. Otherwise close both.
If you plan to re-hide hidden files, folders and drives do the following: In Windows Explorer, click on "organize" at the upper left portion of the explorer window and select "folder and search options" from the menu that appears. Click on the "View" tab. in the window that appears. In the scroll box, look for "hidden Files and folders" Double click it and change the setting to "Don;t Show hidden files folders or drives" Click OK.
