XP Pro 32bit to Windows 8?

I have an older desktop:

Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield @ 2.4Ghz
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
Zalman 9700 CPU cooler
4 GB G.SKILL PC2 6400
Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA
2 x Seagate Barracuda 80GB SATA
XFX HD-4870A-ZHDC XXX 1G
16x Plextor DVD Burner
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 case
Antec True Power Trio TP3-550w PS

Any reason to upgrade to Windows 8 or just leave it alone?

I like Windows 7 vs XP, but Windows 8 loses to both. liberal N proud Jan 2013 #2

The Free one allows you to easily switch between a Win8 UI and a Win7 UI (logoff required). Either run with the "under the hood" benefits of Win 8. Metro is completely gone if you boot in Win 7 mode.

The best part: It uses Native Windows 7 files! I used a Win7 CD as part of the install and then replaced them with the same files from an W7-SP1 device.

It's like lightning.

I know people that still use 95 and 2000. It works on their old computers and does what they want.

I personally use Windows 8 and enjoy it, but XP is still great and will still work for most after Microsoft ends support. All it does at the moment is release the occasional security fix. If security is not an issue, you will only need to switch when (or if) your favorite programs lose Windows XP compatibility. To be honest though, since Windows NT 4, Windows has not changed all that much, and since Vista it has barely changed at all on the kernel level. The GUI is a lot different now, but don't let it scare you. I was a Windows 8 critic, but I ended up using it. I can still play my Windows 95 games like Unreal Tournament and Quake 3. Give it a shot or even maybe play with someone's else computer. If you don't see a compelling reason to switch, you can stick with XP until you see a reason to.

On a home computer, Windows 8 is not going to gain you anything.

Upgrading that copy of XP with 8 will hose that copy of XP and you will no longer be able to use it. It will make that product key useless.

Hey Shred, how's it going. I knew you from Ed's board. My former screen name ended in "1000"

Howdy! Eddy sure has gone big time now. I appreciate about 80% of his work. The other 20% involving just bashing Republicans and cheerleading Obama I can do without.

, Windows 8 will turn your computer into a "Babe Magnet" and it also comes with a serum that will cause you
to be young, very handsome and lucky (you'll hit the lottery tomorrow).

Regarding XP..it's been proven to explode your system at a moments notice and also hurt your dog/cat/bird/bunny..or whatever.

You're Welcome
