Why does my browser (firefox) keep opening new tabs with ads?

It even does it when the browser is closed
Mac 5.1 with high sierra dual proc 64g ram

Open browser
Go to settings
Select "privacy and security"
Find (scroll to) "permissions"
select box for "block pop-up windows"

A place to start, but do install suggested ad blockers.

I operate MS not Mac so I am wrong or not, but the Apple maze likely varies.
