Well, damn ... Apple discontinued the 27-Inch iMac

March 8, 2022

Following the launch of the new Mac Studio and Studio Display, Apple has discontinued the 27-inch iMac.

The 27-inch ?iMac? had remained in the ?iMac? line alongside the smaller 24-inch ?iMac? with Apple silicon and was one of just a few Macs that still featured an Intel processor.

Now with the 27-inch Studio Display that can be connected to any Mac, Apple has seemingly felt there is no need for a large-sized all-in-one desktop computer. The 24-inch ?iMac? is now the only all-in-one desktop computer offered by Apple.

Just discovered this a month after the news was released.

I've been waiting a while for the 27" iMac with the Apple chip.

Shit.

I love how the Jeff Goldblum character in Independence Day finally finds something to which he can connect his mac.

I'm quite sure you realize that image depicting an obvious 'Gender-Changer' would be banned in Florida.

But the teachers can’t even teach how to do that or that adaptors like that exist.

If it were up to DeathSatan, the only approved connector would be the RF adaptor with the flat antenna connections we used to use for our Atari. Nothing else is allowed

I had one of those G3 laptops. I worked in San Francisco at the time and feared nobody on the streets or in the subway.

That was one hellacious hunk of machinery. I later used it with a serial adapter (shown above) to cold-boot and configure lots of Sun servers.

LOVED the "uploading virus" scene. Still do.

I am replying on a 27" iMac ... this has been a life-saver for me. Big sharp (for the time) screen, nice on my aging eyes. iMac and I are still functioning OK.

Bottom left starts out with a SCSI bus terminator, then an adapter from a normal-SCSI connector to the 25-pin version. Then a DB25-DB25 gender changer, a DB25 to DB9 serial adapter, the serial DB9 gender changer. And a DB9 to Mac serial adapter (din 8, possibly Localtalk or serial). And then the Media Vision joystick adapter I've never seen before

But then there's an old style 10Base-2 (aka Thinnet) Ethernet adapter feeding a odd set of RG-58 coax connectors (and getting smaller/then back to RG-58) until it ends with an BNC to 1/4" mono audio jack.

Sad ... they should have properly terminated the Ethernet bus with a 10Base-2 terminator. It's tough to talk Ethernet packets over audio

Now I have the urge to get my old Mac IIsi (running A/UX) out of storage and see if I can get its Ethernet working on my lan again

I'm surprised, since I was hearing rumors of a 27" refresh sometime this year. My trusty 2015 27" bit the dust at the end of last year, and I thought about holding out, but ultimately decided on one of the new laptops. Now I'm glad I did even though I spent more than I'd initially planned.

The 27" Studio Display looks really nice but after dropping quite a lot on the laptop it's just too far out of my budget for the time being.

The Mac Studio configuration (for me) would push the price to around $3800.00 That's roughly the same memory equivalent of my eight-year old 27" iMac (expect for the RAM: 32GB vs 16), plus the cost of a new 27" display.

With the MacMini, plus 27" display, the price drops to around $3000.00

The 24" iMac comes in around $2100.00.

I'll give up the 3 inches to save $900.00. I'd probably need the $900 (or more!) to upgrade my other apps.

I'm getting less for more, and that sucks.

I did seriously consider the 24" machines, but ultimately decided, since I was buying a new one, that I wanted the portability, and the new laptops are pretty powerful. I have not regretted this purchase but boy did it set me back $$$. It's going to have to last for a long time.
