URGENT: Does anyone have experience with Tumblr and/or WordPress?

My eldest is leaving for Budapest on Saturday (for four months) and wants to know which would be best, mostly with respect to creative design, but any input would be appreciated. I don't know shit about either.

If he'll be doing a lot of blogging, writing long multi-paragraph blog entries he may want to go with WordPress. Tumblr however, is really coming on with the creative bloggers. Photos look great, it's dead simple to upload, and the community is becoming extremely active.
