My brother's really conservative

Friend, who I thought was a jerk before I knew his political affiliation; yeasterday he was doing the usual republican rant about how the government is the problem, that we don't need food stamps or welfare, or FEMA. First I told him red states take more from the federal gov't than they give. With a lot of blue states it's the opposite. Then I was like do you really think states could handle billions of dollars in damage on their own? And he said yes TN. did then I proceeded to show him online the 1 billion dollars our state was given when floods and storms hit here. Then I cited hurricane Katrina's 105 billion dollars worth of damage, then he said people should get flood insurance, and save their money. Then I had to tell him that many people lost their businesses and that you have to live in a flood zone to get flood insurance. Then I went on to tell him he's living in a f***ing dream world if he thinks states could handle that on their own. He conceded on the FEMA argument and actually admitted I was right ( FTW!!!!) Then he moves back to welfare and food stamps when I told him a lot of people on food stamps work, they just have a low wage job. He then told me he qualifies for food stamps, but chooses not to get them. Then, I explained people on welfare are not always lazy a person could get ill and lose all of their money and welfare is their only choice. Then I went on to say a family of 4 receives about 900 dollars a month on welfare, so these families aren't going on shopping sprees. He was silent for a second and then said "I didn't say everyone on welfare is lazy." Then I said " then why do you hate welfare so much?" He then says "I work hard for my money, buy my own food, pay my bills, pay my health and car insurance, rent" etc. why should other people get handouts? Then my brother's other friend walked in the room and says " No you don't, you live with your mom." I was laughing so hard when his other friend said that. Then I said "I guess it's a lot easier to not mooch from the gov't when you mooch from your parents instead." Next he got up and walked out of the door. This guy's lack of empathy is scary, as well as his compulsive lying. I wish my bro would ditch this guy.

blocks of text, not so much

that being said, good on ya! and BTW, food stamps were put in place to help farmers, not poor people. the Gov'nmt figured since they had to buy the excess food, might as well give it to the poor.

Of course he does. If he qualifies for food stamps as he says he does then it is very unlikely he can afford to buy his own food, pay all his bills, health care and rent." It is easy to be holier than thou about government handouts when as you said you are mooching off of family, or as I prefer to say your family got your back.

Of course, he doesn't because they lost, i.e., they're losers.
Bet he liked them well enough to vote for them on Nov. 6 over the incumbent Prez.

a banker who pushes a few buttons (and helped to crash the global economy) deserves a $5M bonus
but someone who doesn't even get a living wage doesn't deserve any help.

IMO if the banker deserves his bonus then the rest of us at least deserve enough to get by.

Gives you the typical RW rant hating on welfare and food stamps and overpaid government workers living on taxpayer money while working for a defense company that doesn't pay her enough to support her and her kids. So she lives with my parents who both only get by because they collect ss. (parents are also super conservative and vote for politicians eager to do away with ss.) It does no good to point out their hypocrisy. Unless I want to see them freak out and get angry

but everyone always focuses on welfare handouts and the debt, when they are a tiny percentage of government spending.

Military takes 60% of the federal budget, we need to start bringing that up every chance we get.

Media distracts us with petty divisions meanwhile military contractors and bankers loot the nation.

That needs to repeated until it gets through their brainwashed skulls. It is the sacred private sector doing the theft and democratic governance with regulation standing between them and the robber barons. And that a government strong enough to protect the common man from them doesn't run on fairy dust, it needs tax revenue, of which he'd pay little or none under the Democratic Party platform.

I wish I could argue that well, and find stuff on line that quickly.

It also reminded me of a friend of mine who is always complaining about one ailment or another. We met her and her daughter for lunch one day, and she was going on and on about how they had just registered her daughter for school, and she had to write out about a thousand checks for sports, clubs, etc. and how her carpal tunnel couldn't handle it. Her daughter interjected, "It was three," and before I could even start laughing, her daughter finished, "and I wrote them."

Classic.

If he really does qualify for food stamps he really ought to get them.

But a lot of times people think they qualify for something when they don't. Such as, people will say things like, I'm legally blind without my glasses. No. Legally blind has a very specific definition, that your vision cannot be corrected better than some particular point which is itself such poor vision that you can't do things like drive. Or at least not legally.

Or a co-worker of mine who occasionally says she should retire on disability, not realizing that as long as she can do her job (and she does, and is very good at what she does) she's not eligible for disability.

I am constantly appalled by the hypocrisy of people like this acquaintance, or the other relatives referenced who do not get it that it the people they are voting for actually get their way, then they'll be living on the street.

I wouldn't push his buttons too hard. You never know what people are capable of.

In "good times", we're just a bunch of dopes. In "bad times", they're the ones with guns. Just sayin'.

Many years ago when i was making minimum wage and trying to support wife and child i remember applying for food stamps,i got denied because at minimum wage i was evidently making too much money to qualify..
Contrary to what the rightwing would have you believe If you are on food stamps you aint having no easy life where everything is free.

My Uncle with a straight face told me two weeks ago that FEMA and the UN were working with Obama to raise an army to enslave America...And thats why he needs an AR-15...

I have studied in European history and was amazed to learn that Hitler was a... liberal. Again with a straight face i was told that the first thing Hitler did was take away the guns...Nope I told him the only major piece of gun law that Hitler signed was in 1938 5 years after coming into power and that that law only restricted Jews and Communists...else wise it loosened existing gun law..I was told that I had no Idea what I was talking about...Took him to a cite with the law in German and translated...
He told me ..I shouldn't believe what I find on the internet...

Each time i was assaulted by absurdity i googled it and low and behold there it was, the latest nut job conspiracy. in the case of Hitler and guns..Glenn Beck had a guest on who wrote a book...

I really believe that some where in my uncle is a scared child...who can not sleep because of the monster under his bed.

What is it with repukes only believing what they hear on fox and what they read on Glenn Beck's blog. Then you show them the truth through a non biased source and they run away like a scared cat. It's so nice to be a member of a party that doesn't keep us on a leash of fear. Now it seems the GOP only consists of old people, angry red necks, bigots, and doomsday preppers.

The last two words of your reply hits the nail on the head. As well as bringing up a second question. Also in my family is a priest, Opus Dei, who firmly believe the day of reckoning is coming very soon. Others with out a political or religious motive also seem to be preparing for the end. The Mayan calender. Mass suicides hoping to greet eternity on the tail of a comet...
Why is it that such a large number of people can't get through life with out an existential threat?
Or by not having my own apocalypse, am I the one who carries the burden of a flaw?
