I'd never seen this video. It was posted on youtube a little before the 2012 election, but I don't know when it was made. One moment in the video defining 2008 for me was the image of Jesse Jackson weeping. I wept for almost three days straight.

It was just a fleeting image, one we saw on the Fox News Channel, from the mass gathering in Chicago awaiting the victory speech from President-elect Barack Obama.

But it was a telling one -- the Rev. Jesse Jackson, a face in the crowd (though a highly recognizable one), with tears streaming down his face in the minutes after the pronouncements from the networks that Obama had won the White House.

Tears of joy? Tears of wonderment? Probably a combination of both...

Obama supporters weep with joy in Chicago

...Beth Keegan, a 45-year-old white teacher from the wealthy suburb of Winnetka, jumped in the air and hugged her friend when Obama's victory was announced.

"I'm ecstatic!" she yelled. "It will be the beginning of racial healing in the country."

Also in the park crowd, the Rev. Jesse Jackson had tears streaming down his face as he heard the news. Jackson had to apologize earlier in the campaign for crude remarks he made about Obama that were caught by an open microphone.

His son, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., called the election "a peaceful revolution..."

Ten Misplaces Jesse Jackson

Over at Ten News, they were having their own little problem with people of colour, as they threw together a package for their main news bulletin soon after Senator John McCain made his gracious concession speech...

Hang on, did you recognise that black person crying among the Republican faithful in Phoenix Arizona?

Yes, it was the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Baptist preacher, civil rights campaigner, and lifelong Democrat. And of course, he wasn't in Phoenix Arizona...

According to Ten News, the editing that made it look as though Jesse Jackson was grief-stricken at John McCain's defeat was an oversight due to the extremely tight turnaround between the time the leaders made their speeches and Ten's 5pm News deadline.

I recorded this the night it aired. It was a beautifully presented documentary of the man we call our President. The deep roots of our past (slavery and discrimination our racial divide) all helped to shape this man.

Obama has done much to heal this nation, we have come such a long way. Of course we have a rough road still ahead, but we move forward.

days back when he was so involved with civil rights and all of those who had gone on before. It was a very touching moment...
