Ford made crib that mimics car ride to help babies sleep

Interesting

If you’ve ever had trouble getting a newborn baby to go to sleep, you know that driving around the block is one of the oldest tricks in the book. Now, Ford Motor Company is hoping to make bedtime a little easier on new parents.

On Thursday, Ford announced the development of MAX Motor Dreams, a crib that simulates the motion, engine noise and even street lighting of those nighttime drives, right from the comfort of your own home.

“After many years of talking to mums and dads, we know that the parents of newborns are often desperate for just one good night’s sleep,” said MAX Motor Dreams designer Alejandro Lopes Bravo in a press release. “But while a quick drive in the family car can work wonders in getting baby off to sleep, the poor old parents still have to be awake and alert at the wheel.”

In the mid-1980s, a desperate, sleep deprived new dad invented a device that would attach to a crib to simulate the vibrations of a car at 50 mph. I can't remember the name of it, but it sold quite well. Some parents paid for overnight shipping.

I used to tell parents about it at the peds office where I was working at the time.

a railroad sleeper car. I can get the sound, but the motion of a train is very unique.

Best sleep I ever get is on a train.

and I was too tired to drive and drive!

By the way, there weren't many "real" carseats back then.

We even got to the point where my wife would have the door open so that she wouldn't hear it creak.
Still didn't work. Somehow our daughter knew it was time to wake up the moment we got home.

We switched to watching TV in the dark. That was somewhat successful.

10. You're right about the car seats. The other thing I find quite interesting is the car seat itself

There's NO COMPARISON between todays and those many years ago. Safety sure has been improved!

BTW, My youngest boy did the wake-up trick when we got home too. Not all that often, but it sure was disappointing when he did.

car rides to put my daughter to sleep. I was always able to get her to bed without her waking up.
The next day however I'd barely be able to keep my eyes open.

My mom told me that many a night in the dead of winter, my dad would have to go and start up the car, scrape the snow and ice off the car windows and shovel out the driveway while she bundled me up so they could take me for a short ride in the car on the unplowed road.

13. You would just have to put my youngest in her car seat and she'd be out almost instantly

I wouldn't even have to put her in the car.
