After escaping an enclosure, dozens of goats get loose and run through a neighborhood in Washington state

(CNN) -- A herd of goats can function as a great eco-friendly way to cut the grass, but sometimes they have a mind of their own.

On Tuesday a community in Washington state found out what happens when goats burst out of their enclosure and run through the streets.

Mark Svendsen posted a video as dozens of goats scampered through the Issaquah Highlands community, just east of Seattle.

He said the neighborhood homeowner's association uses the goats to control weeds and help clear vegetation between houses.

Describing the video, Svendsen wrote that the goats had just about chewed through the enclosed field, where they were being kept. But hungering for more green snacks, the herd "broke through their fencing," he said.

Caught on camera: Herd of goats escapes enclosure, runs through neighborhood

SEATTLE (CNN) - A Washington state homeowners association has some explaining to do after its effort to keep the neighborhood looking well-kept became overrun - not with weeds, but with goats.

Dozens of goats flooded the community near Seattle Wednesday. The animals got out of their enclosure and ended up in the neighborhood’s streets.

The goats are used to nibble away the weeds and vegetation between homes, and they were taking their job seriously.

Even a herding dog couldn't get them back into the pin.

That task took several hours and a lot of help from community groups.

Stampede! Goats suddenly hit the suburban streets of Issaquah

BY KIRO 7 NEWS STAFF

Goats were seen running down the streets of Issaquah — a city about 22 miles east of Seattle — and recorded by someone driving by.

The herd — and one dog — was seen munching on the plants of homes at 33rd Avenue NE and NE Magnolia Street.

Mark Svendsen, who gave KIRO 7 TV permission to use the video, posted this description on YouTube:

Our homeowner association hires the goats for clearing vegetation between houses and in buffer zones next to the forest. The goats were scheduled to depart the next morning and had eaten most of the plants in their enclosure. The fresh plants across the street must have been too tempting, and they broke through their fencing into the Issaquah Highlands neighborhood.

It took several hours and a lot of help from the community to get the various groups of the herd back together. Many were collected and temporarily put into the fenced dog park down the hill. Others were coaxed back into their enclosure. Eventually, all goats were accounted for and reunited.

But that video was pretty funny, and I read that they sorted everything out pretty quickly.
