Oregon Burglars Drop Rare Coin Collection Into Coinstar: Victim Recovers Most Of Stolen Money

Turns out a few burglars who thought they cashed in, didn't really make bank at all.

An Oregon man is counting his lucky pennies after police recovered most of a rare coin collection that was stolen and deposited into a supermarket money counting machine on Christmas Day, KOIN-6 reports.

Dan Johnson Sr., of Corbett, says that the 100-year-old collection and approximately 60 pounds worth of silver and jewelery-- which police believe were lifted by three men including Johnson's son -- is worth several thousand dollars.

The alleged thieves, however, deposited the money in a Coinstar counting machine, retrieving a mere $450, according to KGW.

The friend's nephew was stealing from the father's coin collection and using it as pocket money. Even though the father had shown him the coin collection, explained the value and historic significance of the coins, the dumb ass kid still was spending them at face value.

The horrible thing was that the family elected to let the little criminal get away with it. The mother did not want her little darling to have a record. In the long run that didn't save him from his own stupidity. He tried to spend a coin that does not have an equivalent today. The store owner reported him as a forger (forged COIN?)and shoplifter because he tried to leave the store with the merchandise and left the coin on the counter. When the cops got involved they patted him down and found crack in his pocket.

The family still would not press charges for the theft of the coins, but the kid still went to juvie over the crack.
