Oviedo, Fla., wants a municipal image without chickens

The Orlando suburb of Oviedo, Fla., wants to update its image, and the chickens famous for wandering about the city are not part of its plans, officials said.

Plans for a new municipal emblem for Oviedo do not include consideration of depicting poultry, although the official logo includes some equally outdated imagery --- a riverboat, an orange and a stalk of celery, emblems of Oviedo's past and not its future, the Orlando Sentinel reported Tuesday.

A common sight in the city these days are roosters roaming around and they often can be seen in the city's promotional marketing.

But, Mayor Dominic Persampiere said, "We are trying to get away from that." He did acknowledge, though, "the community still identifies" with the free-range chickens.
