Of course they have a right to sue, anyone has a right to sue, the Vermont senator said Sunday on CNNs State of the Union.
Sanders in an interview with the New York Daily News last week initially said the Sandy Hook family members should not have the right to sue gun manufacturers for damages.
"No, I don't," he said, in response to a question from the editorial board.

(3,284 posts)...that is what he's saying. He keeps mentioning that he doesn't want to hold "independent" mom-and-pop gun stores responsible, to try to make himself sound better.

(51,554 posts)No Mr. Sanders, not "anyone has a right to sue." Thanks to your vote for the vile PLCAA law that Hillary voted NO on but was out voted, victims of gun violence can't maintain a lawsuit against gun manufacturers. Their lawsuits are dismissed before they can have their day in front of a jury.

(51,554 posts)Certainly the Iraq War Resolution would have passed without Hillary's vote, but Sanders acts like her vote put it over the top.

(44,173 posts)I take a generally dim view to lawsuits against the gun industry just because some kook went on a shooting rampage.
Unless the gun store owner violated existing laws by selling a gun to an illegal buyer, who then went on a killing spree. That's different.
But I don't like the idea that Congress can just pass blanket legislation outlawing all suits against one industry. That seems to smack of government favoritism toward whichever industries have the most political power.
Let people make their case in court, and if a suit has no merit, let a judge throw it out, or a jury find for the defendant.
