Fri May 27, 2016, 10:49 AM
May 2016
Which two presidential candidates share a secrecy problem? Hint: Neither is named Clinton.

TWITTER EXPLODED Thursday with talk of a possible Donald Trump-Bernie Sanders debate before California’s June 7 primary. On at least one level, we think it would be appropriate for them to share a stage, since they also share an unacceptable lack of transparency.

Both Mr. Sanders and Mr. Trump are eroding an important norm in American political life — the expectation that voters should have a sense of presidential candidates’ financial conduct before they choose who should lead the country. As long as Mr. Sanders is a legitimate candidate, he does not deserve a pass.

25. I think that neither Bernie nor Jane has any intention of releasing any tax returns.
Fri May 27, 2016, 12:06 PM
May 2016

They have too much to hide about their assets (multiple properties and possible rental income), lack of charitable donations (Sanders doesn't believe in charity), indirect investments in fracking and other oil and gas interests (mutual funds, etc.), $200k golden parachute paid to Jane for running Burlington College into bankruptcy, Sanders campaign money paid to Jane (for her services), toxic waste committee money paid to Jane, and god knows what else.

I suppose that Jane has every reason to avoid public scrutiny at this time. But, since they filed jointly and Bernie signed the 1040, it is his responsibility to release the tax forms as well. Passing the buck and the blame to Jane lessens Bernie's credibility. How can he talk about breaking up banks, when he can't even understand or manage his own personal financial accounts? Potential voters have a right to know this stuff.

In the end, he and Jane will be saved by the bell. Hillary's winning the primary will turn out to be a blessing, because there will no longer be any need for him to release anything, until his Vermont Democratic rival in 2018 makes the same demand once again.

Fri May 27, 2016, 02:34 PM
May 2016

Isn't his whole campaign about money, who has it, who doesn't have it, and why? It seems to me that he ought to have educated himself a bit more about money and numbers (math), if he wanted to prescribe cures for "income inequality." Or does he just want to spout words, without any intention of getting something done? Getting something done about money requires knowledge of money and financial transactions. He seems to be better versed in Marxist theory than he is in economics or finance. Maybe he just never bothered to study this stuff, since he regarded finance as a corrupt profession dominated by evil capitalists. For my part, I enjoy learning about everything, even things that fall outside of my talents or interests. I am curious about what makes things work. But, if you want to criticize banking and finance, you have to begin by thoroughly understanding the system and how it operates. Blaming billionaires for everything lacks nuance, and it doesn't really accomplish anything.

28. Senate Bill Would Require Presidential Candidates, Including Trump, To Release Tax Returns

http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyphillipserb/2016/05/25/senate-bill-would-require-presidential-candidates-including-tax-to-release-tax-returns/#27469bbb7b3f

There is no law that says that a presidential candidate must release his or her individual tax returns to the public, but at least one member of Congress thinks there should be. Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-OR) has introduced a bill which would require presidential nominees to release recent tax returns.

The bill, called the Presidential Tax Transparency Act, would require a presidential candidate to release the most recent three years of tax returns to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) within 15 days of becoming the nominee at the party convention. If the candidate refuses to comply, the Treasury Secretary would provide the tax returns directly to the FEC for public release.
Let that last part sink in for a minute.

Sen. Wyden said, about the bill, “Since the days of Watergate, the American people have had an expectation that nominees to be the leader of the free world not hide their finances and personal tax returns.”
I happen to agree with him.

Sen. Wyden continued, “Tax returns deliver honest answers to key questions from the American public. Do you even pay taxes? Do you give to charity? Are you abusing tax loopholes at the expense of middle-class families? Are you keeping your money offshore? People have a right to know.”

I think there is worry in Vermont that Bernie has angered many of his Senate colleagues and, as a result, will be less effective in getting things done for Vermont. He may have less clout from now on. That would create an opportunity for people like Al Giordano to run against him.

It appears that Goddard College has agreed to accept former Burlington College students. Al tweeted this, but I can't find a link in Google News.

80. Yes, he posted this link:Goddard signs agreements to accept Burlington College students
Mon Jun 20, 2016, 10:10 AM
Jun 2016

Goddard College today announced it has signed teach-out agreements that allows Goddard to accept Burlington College’s currently enrolled bachelor’s and master’s degree students who are displaced by its closing.

“We are sad to see Burlington College, a fellow liberal arts school with a similar mission to honor the individuality of each student and to engage learning around the relationship between education and experience, close its doors,” Goddard College President Robert P. Kenny said. “It is a natural fit to offer to accept Burlington’s currently enrolled students into our programs. Like Burlington, we offer an educational model that allows the student to design their own course of study.”

“Goddard will accept all credits in transfer from Burlington College and will make every effort to work with students to develop a plan of study that does not unduly delay the student’s completion date,” said Gariot P. Louima, dean of enrollment & external affairs.

Undergraduate students with less than sixty credits may choose to attend Goddard Undergraduate Program, which includes the Individualized BA, BA in Health Arts & Sciences, and BA in Sustainability degrees.

Students beyond the Associate Degree level may choose to attend Goddard’s Undergraduate Program, Education Program (BA in Education), Psychology & Counseling Program (BA in Psychology), or BFA in Creative Writing Program.

Students pursuing the Master of Arts degree at Burlington College may matriculate as graduate students in Goddard College’s graduate programs, including the Individualized Master of Arts, MA in Education, MA in Health Arts & Sciences, MA in Social Innovation & Sustainability, MA in Psychology, MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, MFA in Creative Writing and MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts.
