Nationwide Chile student protest turns violent as police storm Universidad de Chile headquarters in Santiago due to Molotov cocktails allegedly being thrown from inside building.
SANTIAGO Twenty students were injured yesterday after police stormed the central building of Universidad the Chile, according to Rector Víctor Pérez. Police were allegedly reacting to the throwing of Molotov cocktails in a series of events that followed yet another Chile student protest through the streets of Santiago.
In a statement to the press, Pérez said, Police entered the building without authorization, threw tear gas inside and hit students with batons. There are more than 20 students who are injured. This is unacceptable and we reject it, we call on national authorities to put end to this aggression suffered at the headquarters.
Uniformed police on duty said that they were victims of explosive devices, including three Molotov cocktails and other produce causing obvious blunt damage. Police will not enter the University of Chile if there are no events of this magnitude. The headquarters were taken several days ago and police had not entered it. This an action of flagrante delicto and therefore police action in response to that violence, reports El Mostrador.
Some activists dispute that any Molotov cocktail was thrown, while others suggest that it may have been police themselves who launched the bomb in order to incite violence.

(1,954 posts)... are direct products of the fascist dictatorships and haven't been reformed. They still have the unofficial task of repressing demonstrations for no other reason than repression per se. Outdated structures that need to be overcome. This can no longer be tolerated.
More power to Chilean protesters. May they stay safe and their voices be heard.
