Latin America: Evo Morales And Nicolas Maduro Defend The Region’s Union

Latin America: Evo Morales And Nicolas Maduro Defend The Region’s Union
By America XXI
Sunday, June 16, 2013

On May 25, Washington’s advance across the region by means of the Pacific Alliance met a counterattack in Bolivia. Bolivia’s President Evo Morales and Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro relaunched the Bolivarian Alliance of the Peoples of Our Americas (ALBA), signed bilateral agreements in 14 strategic fields and denounced the new imperialist offensive against the region.

As a response to the formal invitation extended to Ecuador to join the Pacific Alliance, the Bolivian president called an ALBA meeting of governments and social movements in Guayaquil to “liberate the countries that are still subject to the empire” and “defend the anti-imperialist governments” of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Nicolás Maduro did not mince his words when giving this warning on behalf of the ALBA governments after the second Joint Integration Meeting between Bolivia and Venezuela on May 25: “We raise a voice of warning for the peoples of Latin America because imperialism is coming with a new offensive to impose his economic colonialist project through the FTAA [Free Trade Area of the Americas].”

It was the consequence of the advance of the Pacific Alliance, a bloc comprised by four US-allied governments: Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Peru, which seeks to reinstate free trade in the region and held its 7th summit in Cali, Colombia, one day earlier. “They want to promise old chains by wearing new masks”, denounced the Venezuelan president in a clear reference to the bloc, which was launched in 2012.

They try to create an anti USA alliance and don't expect the USA to react....it's amazing how naive these two guys can be. And what about Jaua grinning happily with Kerry?

The point I was making is the utter lack of common sense those two display, constantly bitching about the USA then asking for meetings to say hello and grin n front of the cameras. They have a well earned reputation as total jerks. Maduro really needs to focus because standard and poors just nailed their ratings. Their economy is hurting bad and all they can think of is how to borrow more money.

that the Pacific agreement will pick off Ecuador from their lame trade bloc. The currently Andean preferential trade agreement expires this summer very soon I believe. Colombia and Peru have already signed an FTA with the US replacing the Andean agreement. Bolivia was suspended a few years back leaving Ecuador the only country left with the agreement in place with the US. It will not be renewed just with Ecuador so it will be interesting to see what Ecuador will do with this pacific agreement. There is nothing that prevents an ALBA nation from entering into an agreement with other nations as far as I know. Ven and Bolivia simply don't want to see that happen.

More important than ever. With Chávez gone and the opportunity represented by diplomatic advances of US-backed Pacific Alliance, there will be actions to undermine the regional cooperation between South American countries and disarticulate progressit governments. It's good to see Maduro and Morales reaffirming the alliance between both countries.

candidates and Guatemala and other Pacific countries, and even Paraguay invited as an observor. Australia and Asian pacific countries want in too. Ecuador appears to want in on this so thats what worries Maduro and Morales as the little Alba will be crushed by the pacific alliance.
