Brazil Media Groups Use Drones to Follow Protests

Brazil Media Groups Use Drones to Follow Protests
June 21, 2013, 5:37 p.m. ET

By JEFFREY T. LEWIS

SÃO PAULO—Two of Brazil's largest media organizations have adopted the latest technology to record images of the protests around the country, using remotely operated aircraft to follow the demonstrations.

Folha de São Paulo, one of the largest news organizations in Brazil, said it started using the technology Tuesday to cover a protest march in the city of São Paulo.

Folha, as its main newspaper is also known, posted images recorded by its drone in its website. The images are from Thursday's protest march in São Paulo, which was the second time the organization used a drone, according to Yago Mepring, who works at Folha TV, the group's online video section.

"We like the images and we expect to use drones again," he said. Mr. Mepring said Folha hired a contractor who owns and operates the equipment, and asked that further questions about the use of the drone to be sent to the Folha multimedia group email. The group didn't respond to other questions.

Globo, Brazil's biggest media group, which owns a television network, newspapers, magazines and radio stations, also posted videos recorded by a drone in Rio de Janeiro to its website. Globo couldn't be reached immediately to comment on the use of the drone.

If it were about protests in Colombia?

That is, are you taking a principled stand against protestors, or only ones in countries whose government you support?

It's good that a jury finally saw the BS for what it was.

All major protests deserve in the air drones piloted by the protesters.

No one covers the massive numbers that occur in these protests.

I do like the passive aggressive style used by that user and many here. Calling us fascists, calling us right wingers, and getting away with it. Perhaps there's a sea change and people are realizing all corrupt governments, left or right, should be protested and stopped with their bullshit.

The fascist "news" organizations which served the interests of the US-supported brutal, dirty, murderous, torture-loving fascist military dictatorship, and carries on that philosophy, already tried to cover the protests, yet they were ridiculed, scorned, told off, and clearly unwanted by the protesters, not to mention being clobbered by the police who seemed to imagine they were there to record their rough treatment of the protesters.

They sent "reporter" after "reporter" who helplessly flailed around, was drowned out by the crowds chanting as he/she tried to do live shots for tv, and protesters cheerfully walked along, escorting them as they headed for their cars, vans, etc. planning to get the heck outta there.

Protesters didn't threaten them, but cops did. Cops are the same everywhere, apparently.

After the teams of "journalists" the "news" organizations went to helicopter, and those with drones dragged them out, apparently.

That's the way it happened, which anyone bothering to pay attention understood yesterday, at the latest. Harsh federal government measures didn't happen as everyone knows, and any fascist clown attempting to push that story is speaking through his wrong end, typically normal right-wing behavior.
