Colombia will invest more than $50 million in the creation of a police intelligence unit that is able to wiretap internet services like Facebook and Skype, newspaper El Tiempo reported Sunday.
According to the dailys Sunday edition, the online wiretapping equipment that the police aims to acquire will allow authorities to intercept in real-time and with a warrant what is said, written and sent in emails, and on Facebook, Twitter, Line, Viber, Skype and other online platforms.
The new spying service reportedly has been dubbed the Unique Monitoring and Analysis Platform, or PUMA for its acronym in Spanish.
The center of operations will be constructed in the west of the capital Bogota and managed by the Prosecutor Generals Office together with the Inspector Generals Office.
According to El Tiempo, the new spy center can be operational by 2014.

"Simply put, Colombia should not be rewarded with a trade agreement until it develops a proven track record of ensuring that workers can exercise the fundamental rights of free association and collective bargaining; preventing violence against union leaders and other social justice advocates; and bringing to justice those who perpetrated such crimes. Providing Colombia with unfettered access to the U.S. market, and beneficial terms for investment, government procurement, and other commercial areas without requiring sustained and measurable progress toward protecting human rights will undercut our leverage to encourage Colombia to follow up its promises and intentions with effective actions."

And Ecuador who supports Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and Edwin Snowden is now our enemy because Ecuador's president is "an enemy of free speech"?
I fear we will always be gullible nation spoon fed by the corporate media to support their rationalities for their insanity and greed.....

Totally appreciated your video, it was great. Thank you.
(I guess the US gov't liked Ecuador the old way, with 3 coups, 7 presidents in 10 years! Easier to manipulate and control from outside.)

The last part in the video certainly helps sum up things from an Ecuadorian perspective. A perspective that most Americans will never be privy to unfortunately.

(770 posts)This is a simple squeeze. The FARC are dealing to enter politics. They are communists and communism won't sell in Colombia if the economy is doing well. The USA has been awakened to the danger posed by a Cuba/Venezuela axis allied with Iran, Russia and China...suddenly we see the USA becoming much more active using commerce and its own market as a lever. I see a lot of propaganda coming from the radical left but even though USA foreign policy tends to be shoddy and Kerry has demonstrated he's somewhat incompetent, Obama is in charge and he does understand nuances. He will help Colombia because he has no choice, it has to stand against the Cuban threat financed by Venezuela. So this is becoming more of an economic war. I would expect Venezuela to read the tea leaves and reform its currency controls or it's gong to run out of gas fighting with the northern giant.

(160,527 posts)DU'ers have been following Latin American events for a very long time. We're not sitting around waiting for someone to stumble by and give us his two cents worth of his opinions.
Santos made peace with Hugo Chavez and started increasing trade as soon as he was inaugurated, whereas Alvaro Uribe had acted like a prime a$$hole every day he was in office, couldn't have possibly been nastier, or more right-wing. He won't be able to duck the law regarding his criminality forever, either.
Santos has surprised many who expected him to curry favor from the US at the expense of his relationship with other South American countries. He has been far more amenable to his leftist neighbors than Uribe, from the very first.

This would go over a lot better if you told it to people in Miami, or Hialeah.
