Son of US federal judge hospitalized on eve of murder trial in Puerto Rico puts case on hold
By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, July 29, 4:13 PM

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The murder trial in Puerto Rico for the son of a U.S. federal judge is on hold because the defendant has been hospitalized for undisclosed reasons.

Pablo Casellas Toro is accused of shooting his wife, Carmen Paredes, to death at their home in a wealthy suburb of San Juan. Jury selection had been scheduled to start Friday. But the judge in the case ruled Monday that the 47-year-old Casellas is not medically able to attend his trial. Judge Jose Ramirez Lluch did not disclose details about the defendant’s condition as he scheduled a status hearing for Aug. 12.

Casellas had been free on $4 million bond and living with his father, U.S. District Judge Salvador Casellas.

Lawyers for Casellas told reporters his condition is “very delicate,” but gave no details.
