Obama plans to host Uruguay's president next month
Apr 14, 4:40 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House says Uruguay's president is planning to visit next month.

The White House says the May 12 visit will highlight the Obama administration's support for President Jose Mujica's (moo-HEE'-kuh) record on human rights and global security. The White House says President Barack Obama also wants to discuss growing economic ties and other issues.

Mujica has said recently that the two countries are negotiating a release of some Guantanamo Bay detainees into Uruguay.

WASHINGTON, April 15 (KUNA) -- Uruguay's President Jose Mujica Cordano is set to meet US President Barack Obama at the White House on May 12, it was announced here late Monday.

"The visit will highlight the close partnership we enjoy with Uruguay and our strong support for the Mujica Administration's leadership on human rights, social inclusion, and global peace and security," said White House Press Secretary Jay Carney in a statement.

He added that Obama "looks forward to discussing ways to grow our bilateral economic ties and improve market access for each other's goods and services; expand our collaboration on science, technology, and health; increase educational exchanges; and consult on multilateral issues including peacekeeping." In March, Mujica revealed that the two countries were in talks for Uruguay to accept the transfer of five detainees from Guantanamo Bay prison. However his condition was for the US to release a number of jailed Cuban spies.

The US has since responded that it considers Mujica a "valuable partner" but has no knowledge of his request to free the Cuban detainees. (end) ys.hb

(Odd that the President says he knows nothing about Mujica's comments on the Cuban Five prisoners, when it was posted here some time ago. ODD. Are people operating behind his back? Probably wouldn't be the first time this has happened.)
