The initiative will restore the productivity of coffee crops destroyed by plague.

In the state of Barinas, communities organized within three local communal councils are developing a new type of coffee resistant to blight.

The project is aimed at strengthening the local economy and helping farmers to recover productive lands after the plague ruined their coffee crops, informed Vladimir Pavel Carrillo Bolaños, teleSUR correspondent. The communities are working on 30 hectares of land, that at an altitude of 800 metres and with warm weather, is perfect for coffee growing. Their crop will benefit over 60 families, though over 2,000 are involved in the project.

“We are restoring the coffee plantation with one of our own species, from Venezuela, resistant to blight, and we are working on improving productivity,” agronomist Luis Gomez told teleSUR.

Jose Leal, from the council La Bellaca, emphasized the importance of changing the economic model, currently dependent on oil income toward a model based on more on local agriculture.
