Venezuelans Protest Privatisation of Social Housing as Parliament Approves in First Discussion

Venezuelans Protest Privatisation of Social Housing as Parliament Approves in First Discussion

By Rachael Boothroyd Rojas and Jonas Holldack

Caracas, January 30th 2016 (venezuelanalysis.com) - Venezuelan housing rights groups took to the streets of Caracas on Thursday to reject the political opposition’s plans to privatise social housing.

Since launching its housing "mission" or program in 2012, the Bolivarian government, together with communities, has built more than 1 million homes for some of Venezuela’s poorest families.

But the recently built social housing is now under threat of being sold off, thanks to a motion pledging to privatise the houses introduced by the newly elected opposition-controlled National Assembly early in January.

Dubbed the Law for the Award of Property Deeds to the Beneficiaries of the Venezuelan Great Housing Mission (GMVV), the legislation was approved by parliament in initial discussions on Thursday. It will now go to second discussion where it will likely be passed.

1. The law basically allows residents to actually have the property rights of their houses

This way they don't have to worry about the government threatening them to kick them out since they would be the actual owners of their homes. Of course, the Chavista leadership doesn't want that, and obviously wishes to have the power to extort people into supporting them or else they get thrown into the streets.

But then she probably thinks it's a US/CIA plot of some sort to vilify the great Maduro.

so it's about the chavistas control of the people and votes, not for any good will.
Also, it appears the govt lied about the number of units it built, no wonder the chavistas oppose this bill.

7. Yep, since she doesn't believe that chavistas oppose the measure for political reasons

I am assuming she is against people owning property in general. Very odd.
