Organizers highlighted a record number of U.S. boats and women in one of the oldest fishing competitions in the world.
About 90 boats from around 10 countries of fishing enthusiasts competed Wednesday in Cuban seas in a bid to win the Hemingway International Billfishing Tournament, named after U.S. writer Ernest Hemingway.
From Monday until Saturday, the fishermen will be chasing marlin and other large deep sea fish, including tuna and wahoo, using 50-pound fishing lines, at Marina Hemingway, 9 miles west of Havana.
The chase will use a tag-and-release method, applied since 1997 and approved by the International Game Fish Federation, to which Cuba belongs, in order to protect the species and ecosystem.
