A court found that an 18-year ban on her holding public office over alleged ties to guerrillas was not based on any hard evidence.
One of Colombia's highest courts has canceled a six-year-old ruling that banned Piedad Cordoba, a former Colombian senator and prominent human rights activist, from holding public office for the next 18 years, ruling Tuesday that accusations she had ties to the FARC were unfounded.
After weighing Cordoba's situation for two months, judges agreed to lift the 2010 ban imposed by Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez, which had forced Cordoba to leave her position in the Colombian Senate.
The decision was officially justified then based on the fact that Cordoba's name appeared various times in emails found in the computer of FARC leader Raul Reyes, who Colombian forces killed in a 2008 raid on Ecuadorean territory. Cordoba was then a loud supporter in the Senate of the Colombian peace process between the government and FARC. But the court found that the government was wrong when it approved evidence collected from the computer, as the documents had earlier been declared invalid by Colombia's Supreme Court.
