Brazil is none too happy with Costa Rica after the Central American nation boycotted unelected President Michel Temer's address Tuesday at the United Nations, with the country's coup government summoning Costa Rica's ambassador in Brasilia on Tuesday night to explain the decision.
Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solis explained Thursday that he decided to leave the U.N. session in New York because of some behaviors that raised eyebrows with regard to the impeachment of former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
Costa Rica was not the only country that refused to attend Temer's speech, but it was the only one that does not belong to the Bolivarian Alliance for the People, or ALBA, which includes Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Cuba, whose heads of state all boycotted the address.
Brazil's Foreign Minister Jose Serra said that while he expected the reaction of the ALBA group, Costa Rica's behavior required a detailed explanation. Brazil's lower house also approved a resolution demanding Costa Rica justify its actions.
