Ecuador's National Electoral Council began a recount process Tuesday of all the ballots that had inconsistencies during the April 2 presidential elections, where Lenin Moreno was declared the president-elect.
A total of 3,865 ballot packages will be reviewed, which represent 1,275,450 votes, or 11.2 percent of the total votes across the country and abroad. These are the ballots that both parties Alianza Pais and CREO-SUMA presented documentation and legal complaints against.
CNE officials completed the scanning process of the recounted ballots and added the reports to the final tally. The process is open to the public and includes the presence of political parties, military and police, and international observers.
More than 700 people in 250 work tables from the electoral council at the Coliseum Ruminñahui of the capital city of Quito expect to finish the recount process at 8 p.m. local time.
