Car Wash probe set to unveil new bribery revelations

Friday, June 2, 2017

After a long wait, the Brazilian courts are now in a position to share information about the bribes paid by Odebrecht officials in 12 countries, including the US$35 million in Argentina, setting the stage for a fresh wave of revelations reverberating across Latin America.

While the information was not immediately available yesterday, the June 1 deadline set in December 2016 as part of a deal struck between Odebrecht and Brazilian judicial authorities over illicit payments for contracts contained in the Lava Jato expired and four Argentine federal prosecutors today will be travelling to Brazil in order to advance in their respective investigations. Prosecutors Sergio Rodríguez (Administrative Investigations), Franco Picardi, Gerardo Pollicita and Carlos Stornelli will be headed to Brasilia to meet with Deputy Attorney General José Bonifacio Borges de Andrada and Vladimir Aras, the head of international cooperation at the Brazilian Attorney’s General’s office, according to state news agency Télam.

Each prosecutor has a separate but connected case involving alleged Odebrecht bribes in projects such as the Sarmiento tunneling or an AYSA water treatment plant. Prosecutor Federico Delgado, who is also handling a case, reportedly declined to travel on the grounds that it was not yet necessary.

Separately, the head of a local farm group said this week he will ask Congress to investigate five acquisitions made by Brazilian meatpacker JBS on suspicion the company inflated the purchase prices to conceal bribes, although he said he had no proof.
