Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Max should make landfall along Mexico's west coast Thursday afternoon or evening.

In its 1 p.m. CDT advisory, the NHC said the center of Max was located 35 miles southeast of Acapulco. It was traveling east at 8 mph and had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.

Max strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Thursday morning.

The government of Mexico issued a hurricane warning along the coast from Zihuatanejo to Punta Maldonado and a hurricane watch and tropical storm warning from east of Punta Maldonado to Laguna de Chacahua.
