Bill for Chemical Castration Presented in Peru

Lima, Nov 14 (Prensa Latina) The Peruvian Parliament is ready to analyze a bill for chemical castration for rapists, as a way to fight that crime, which has high rates in this country.

Parliamentarian Cesar Vasquez, member of the party Alianza para el Progreso (Alliance for Progress), recently presented the bill, which is in favor of changing the Criminal Code with that measure against rapists, aiming at preventing them from repeating that kind of behavior, besides rising the the maximum sentence from eight to 15 years in jail.

Chemical castration, according to the bill, would be carried out by a technical team that is yet to be shaped up and the measure, which consists of applying medicines that reduce the level of testosterone temporarily and thus the sexual impulse. It would be applied after the rapist finishes two thirds of his sentence.

A similar bill, presented last year by legislator Yonhy Lescano, is also being analyzed by the Justice and Human Rights Commission.
