Pope marries couple on an airplane in Chile
Surprise! Pope in Chile celebrates crew marriage during flight to Iquique
On the flight that took him to Iquique, the last stage of his trip to Chile, Pope Francis celebrated the marriage of two crew members of the airline Latam.
Paula Podest and Carlos Ciuffardi approached the Holy Father because they were going to take the group photo of the crew with him and in the dialogue they told him that they were married but only for civilians.
In statements to journalists, Carlos shared that they were to marry on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the church in Ñuñoa that they attended, but that the wedding could not be celebrated because the bell tower of the temple fell.
The earthquake that hit Chile that day claimed the lives of more than 500 people.
The crew member told the story to the Pope when he approached Paula: "I introduced her as my wife, and he asked us if we were married. I said, 'yes for the civilian, for the Church we could not for the earthquake.' "
