Interview Rolling Stone: Gustavo Petro

Interview Rolling Stone: Gustavo Petro

Challenging the story

BY DIEGO ORTIZ | 05 Feb, 2018

In an improvised office, with very few furniture ("this office is the product of the economic blockade imposed on me for two years, from the fines" ), and without coffee, we coordinated an interview with Gustavo Petro in the midst of his hectic schedule of political campaign. The single presentation of this cover sparked a storm in social networks that says everything about the current state of national politics.

We talked with Petro for several hours about many issues, including the way in which polarization in Colombia has been the result of hate strategies created by different political groups, and how this has been fueled by the systematic manipulation of information from some media. There was also talk of the way in which it has worked as a strategy to keep an aristocracy in power that for years has been managing public resources turbidly. "The masters of humanity," as Chomsky called them. Or how, for more than 50 years, we have been systematically led to believe that employment, health and education are things that we must earn with the sweat of the brow, and not fundamental rights or a responsibility of the State. Then the resignation has become widespread and we all prefer to pursue the same goal: "Go ahead." Survive at any cost.

With an uncertain future and with all the presidential candidates more focused on the distribution coalitions and not on the collective benefit, for ROLLING STONE it is imperative to focus on the proposals that seem to depart from continuity. Petro presented to us his ideas about education, the environment, the protection of the rights of the LGTBI community and the field, fundamental aspects for our audience, young and knowledgeable, analytical and diverse.

This is his testimony, the result of a fluid conversation, built on the basis of respect and without prior restrictions.
