Mexican candidate, party leader killed in Chihuahua as fears of election violence ignite

The killings of a political candidate and a party leader last weekend in Chihuahua have intensified concerns about rising violence during Mexico's election season.

The deaths are part of a surge in violence across the state and a rash of killings of Mexican political candidates and elected officials.

A candidate for town councilor was killed Sunday morning when gunmen launched a large-scale attack on the town of Ignacio Zaragoza in northwestern Chihuahua, state police officials said.

Liliana Garcia was running for municipal councilor as a candidate for the Party of the Democratic Revolution, known as the PRD.
