Tourism collapses in Cuba

Without transport, hygiene, electricity or hot water tourism to Cuba collapses

With this scenario, concludes a report by the consultancy The Havana Consulting Group, it is unrealizable that the Cuban tourist sector reaches the goal of five million tourists

July 31, 2018 -Tourism to Cuba suffered a decline in the first half of 2018, especially from the US , which fell by 23.6% compared to the same period of 2017, according to a specialized consultancy.

The report "The Cuban industry of tourism in the eye of the storm?", Prepared by The Havana Consulting Group (THCG), fits that decline in a downward trend in global tourism to Cuba during the first half of this year , reflected in a contraction of 5.67% (more than 150,000 fewer tourists).

"The first half of 2018 has been traumatic and devastating for the Cuban tourism industry" due to the combination of "bad practices and countless accumulated unresolved problems" in this sector, according to the report.

...the report, prepared by Emilio Morales, president of the THCG , shows a drop in tourism in Cuba from the main countries of origin: Canada (-8%), USA (-23.6%), France (-4.3%) , Germany (-15.5%), United Kingdom (-8.8%), Italy (-21%) and Spain (-0.9%).

...The report continues to shed other causes of the decline of tourism in the Caribbean island , such as the "poor value for money of the product being offered", the "problems of maintenance of luxury hotel facilities, lack of hygiene, cleanliness, electricity and even hot water."

When 75-90% of the cash that comes into Cuba goes directly into the pockets of the Castroists and the remainder is left for wages, services, upkeep and improvements, things aren't going to be comparable to other destinations.

Some Canadian friends just came back and they said, "Never again". No hot water in what was billed as an "upscale, luxury hotel" and electricity was hit or miss. There were charges for everything, including toilet paper... apparently wiping your ass in Cuba with a paper product is a luxury item?

My attention was called to your thread, having seen it just moments after it was posted, and within fewer than 10 minutes, it already had 92 hits on it, and there was no option but to snicker to myself. That just doesn't happen, as anyone who has watched small forums is aware. So funny.

Looked immediately for any "confirming" info. on this sensantional headline to find NONE. What a surprise!

Strange day in some places.

Cuba had a 7 percent decline in overall tourism during the first three months of 2018, partly caused by a sharp drop in U.S. travel to the island, according to official data released Tuesday.

American travel to the Caribbean island is only 56.6 percent of what it was in 2017, said Michel Bernal, the commercial director for the Cuban Tourism Ministry during a news conference on Tuesday.
