Brazil police target brewery CEO in graft case

By MAURICIO SAVARESE
yesterday

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian police said Wednesday they are seeking to arrest the CEO of a beer maker who is accused of paying kickbacks to politicians disguised as donations.

Federal police said Grupo Petropolis chief Walter Faria had not been found, but three other suspects had been arrested so far.

Prosecutors say the brewery laundered the equivalent to $87 million between 2006 and 2014 on the behalf of construction company Odebrecht.

The case is part of the sprawling “Car Wash” corruption probe that has ensnared top politicians and businessmen over the last few years.

Grupo Petropolis is the maker of beer Itaipava, one of the most popular in Brazil.

Lava Jato says Walter Faria irregularly repatriated R $ 1.4 billion

The Federal Police indicated that businessman Walter Faria, owner of the Petrópolis group, repatriated irregularly in 2017, R $ 1,393,800,399.02, using the Special Regime of Exchange and Tax Regularization (RERCT). He is the subject of a probation warrant in the 62nd phase of Operation Lava Jato, christened Rock City.

The PF suspects that the "amounts would come from the practice of 'cash two' in the company." According to the Federal Police, the operation had its origin in a scheme of tax evasion "that counted on the circumvention of beer production meters, which was then sold directly to small merchants in kind, and the values were then handed over to Odebrecht."

According to the federal police officer responsible for the investigation, Tiago Javarotti, the businessman cannot yet be considered a fugitive because, to do so, one must make sure that the target of the warrant has knowledge of the expedition. "We couldn't reach him at home because he left before, but we don't use the outlaw expression."

Attorney Robson Pozzobon, in turn, explained that Faria's pre-trial detention order is designed to ensure public order, enforce the criminal order, and make the proceeds of crime recovered.
