Mexico imposes up to 15 years sentence for blocking cell phones

Mexico, Dec 29 (Prensa Latina) Anyone who blocks telephone, radio, GPS, data or image transmission signals in Mexico can reportedly be sentenced to up to 15 years in jail.

With modifications that Congress introduced in recent days to Article 190 of the Federal Law on Telecommunications and Broadcasting, and Article 168 of the Federal Penal Code, the manufacture, sale, installation, carrying or use of so-called signal jammers is punishable.

These reforms respond to the fact that the crime of robbery of vehicles is facilitated by the use of signal blockers, which neutralize the GPS device of the units and make it difficult to locate them.

The National Chamber of Cargo Transportation reports that in 75 percent of the cases of theft communication signal blockers were used.

This equipment, which can be purchased for about a thousand pesos (about 53 dollars), is also used to deactivate car and home alarms.

"phone-free" zones. I know there are legal restrictions on their use, but an outright ban may be going to far.
