Mexico City orders prison in animal cruelty cases
Dec 29, 3:45 PM EST
MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexico City lawmakers have approved prison terms for animal cruelty, previously considered a civil offense sanctioned with fines and detentions.
The capital's legislative assembly unanimously agreed that people who intentionally abuse and cause animals harm will face up to two years in prison and pay up to $500. If the animal is killed, they can face up to four years in prison and a $2,000 fine.
Antonio Padierna, president of the assembly's law enforcement and justice committee, said late Friday that if animals are killed for food, the death must be quick and not cause pain.
The lawmakers agreed current administrative laws weren't doing enough to end animal cruelty. In Mexico City, animals are sometimes killed by being burned, beaten or shot.

(2 posts)I wish it would spread all over mexico. We have a HUGE problem with street dogs and animal cruelty. The streets are full, people only want puppies and out they go when grown, cruelty is common on street dogs and accepted, people go in shock at the mention of having them spayed or neutered. Not even considered. Even the farm animal sales most people in the us would not believe. When it's accepted by everyone it's hard to change. Puppies wandering the street lost from their mothersand not old enough to even be eating solid food is heartbreaking.

(160,649 posts)Cruelty is so hard to overcome with some people who have formed in a brutal way. It's so sad.
The world is a non-stop hell for the helpless. This will have to change before we can call ourselves civilized.
