The leader of a cartel group operating in Dallas was sentenced to more than 16 years in federal prison Wednesday after he admitted to conspiring to traffic drugs, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas announced.

Carlos Espinoza-Juarez, 33, pleaded guilty in July 2020 to money laundering and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin. He was sentenced Wednesday to 16 years and eight months by a U.S. district judge, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Federal prosecutors said Espinoza-Juarez, who was connected to the Santa Rosa Lima Drug Cartel and other drug trafficking organizations, admitted to orchestrating a series of drug deliveries across the country during at least a four-year span.

He admitted to directing people to deliver ounces of heroin to buyers in exchange for money on two separate occasions in 2015. Espinoza-Juarez also confessed to sending three kilograms of heroin to Massachusetts and using fake names to wire money to Mexico, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
