UPDATED ON: OCTOBER 25, 2022 / 2:39 PM / AP
Serious, standing upright and dressed in long gala dresses despite the midday Cuban heat Lisset and Liusba quietly walk up the ten steps of the notary office, their hands clenched and shaking. Less than a few feet ahead walk their two young daughters.
Nearly an hour later, when they walked out of the doors, the tension on their faces was replaced by smiles. From that moment, they were wives.
It became a possibility just three weeks before on the island when Cuba's new Family Code opening up everything from equal marriage to surrogate mothers came into effect.
The couple, who have been together for seven years, is one of the first to make the decision to get legally married in Cuba following the code.

JUNE 21, 2001. A few hours before floats, rainbow flags, and a sea of humanity filled Sao Paulo's central Avenida Paulista last Sunday for Latin America's biggest ever Pride Parade, Agence France Presse reported that, in Cuba, two gay male couples also made history by publicly holding the first gay wedding there.

Cuba approves same-sex marriage in a referendum
September 27, 2022 11:22 AM ET
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
HAVANA Cubans have approved a sweeping "family law" code that will allow same-sex couples to marry and adopt as well as redefining rights for children and grandparents, officials said Monday, though opposition in the national referendum was unusually strong on the Communist Party-governed island.
The measure which contains more than 400 articles was approved by 66.9% to 33.1%, the president of the National Electoral Council, Alina Balseiro Gutiérrez, told official news media, though retM
The reforms had met unusually strong open resistance from the growing evangelical movement in Cuba and many other Cubans despite an extensive government campaign in favor of the measure, including thousands of informative meetings across the country and extensive media coverage backing it.
Cuban elections in which no party other than the Communist is allowed routinely produce victory margins of more than 90% as did a referendum on a major constitutional reform in 2019.

(2,214 posts)That is a blatant lie.
Here are some of the major parties in Cuba. The union parties hold the majority of seats in the Assembly.
* Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC) {Communist Party of Cuba}
* Partido Demócrata Cristiano de Cuba (PDC) {Christian Democratic Party of Cuba} - Oswaldo Paya's Catholic party
* Partido Solidaridad Democrática (PSD) {Democratic Solidarity Party}
* Partido Social Revolucionario Democrático Cubano {Cuban Social Revolutionary Democratic Party}
* Coordinadora Social Demócrata de Cuba (CSDC) {Social Democratic Coordination of Cuba}
* Unión Liberal Cubana {Cuban Liberal Union}

(160,555 posts)It appears they believe US Americans are bound to believe them since Washington has done everything in its power to keep US citizens from knowing anything at all about how things operate there, by refusing to let ordinary people go there, even to stop in, by sailboat, for repairs!
At one time they've even had agents stationed in Canadian airports, watching the passenger lists of planes going to Cuba, watching to catch US citizens going to Cuba from Canada! So damned sad.
You may remember the Cuban "exile" in Miami who moved to Cuba and started his own political party, Eloy Guttierez Menoyo! Unexpectedly, for the brain-washed masses, he never was assassinated after he did it! OMG!
Eloy Gutierrez Menoyo, and his party, Cambio Cubano. His fellow original "exiles" in Miami hated him once he announced he was in favor of building a dialogue with Cuba.
Thanks for the source link, very interesting.
The truth is always so different from the concoctions the Kool Aid chuggers have been bolting down.

Not the new president, Raul, although he has promised to push through "structural and conceptual" changes to this communist island in the Caribbean.
It is Raul's daughter, Mariela Castro.
As head of the government-funded National Centre for Sex Education, she is trying to change people's attitudes towards minority groups in the community.
She is currently attempting to get the Cuban National Assembly to adopt what would be among the most liberal gay and transsexual rights law in Latin America.
The proposed legislation would recognise same-sex unions, along with inheritance rights. It would also give transsexuals the right to free sex-change operations and allow them to switch the gender on their ID cards, with or without surgery.
