Mystery surrounds death of bankrupt bank trustee who fell from 15th floor of building in Bolivia

MAY 30, 2023 / 7:51 AM / AP

A prosecutor in Bolivia launched an investigation Monday into the mysterious death of the trustee of a bankrupt bank who fell from the 15th floor of a building and his family disputed claims he took his own life.

Several of Bolivia's top leaders have demanded an impartial investigation into the death of Carlos Alberto Colodro, 63, who was appointed as trustee of Fassil Bank last month after the government took control of it amid its insolvency and a run on deposits.

Colodro, who was tasked with liquidating the bank, was found dead on Saturday, apparently from a fall from a building in the eastern city of Santa Cruz.

Although officials said the death initially looked like a suicide, many immediately raised questions because Colodro's job as the liquidator of the bank had apparently touched powerful interests. Fassil was the country's fourth largest in terms of deposits.

Expertises reveal that the letter and style of the posthumous letter attributed to Carlos Colodro was written by him

Carlos Colodro's letter was distributed in two parts, the first page came to light on Sunday and a second part was published on Tuesday.

The Technical Scientific Research Institute of the Police University (Iitcup) carried out the analysis of the posthumous letter attributed to the controller of the former Banco Fassil, Carlos Colodro. The expert opinion, carried out between Sunday and Monday, to the handwritten letter, indicates that the content would correspond to his handwriting.

This is how through the result of the investigation to which El Deber agreed , it is known that the inquiries will be made under the figure of suicide and not homicide. The investigation that included the graphological study of the posthumous letter began after Colodro died after falling from the 15th floor of the Ambassador building, located on Avenida San Martín, of Equipetrol.

According to the media report, this letter, of which a second part was recently revealed, was subjected to a graphotechnical study, which revealed that the letter and the pulse correspond to the style of Fassil's auditor.

For his part, the attorney for the inspector's family, Jorge Valda, affirmed that Colodro's relatives do not recognize this letter as true, since they point out that this would not be his handwriting or the style of the deceased. In addition to this, they raised a question, since they detail that the existence of this letter was known through the Minister of Government and not through the Prosecutor's Office.

The letter was disseminated after the Minister of Government, Eduardo Del Castillo referred to it, first the first part of it was known and a second part recently came to light. This would be the letter attributed to the controller:

“They deceived me, they turned their backs on me: they killed me

The time has come to say ENOUGH to this hell that I had to live since April 26, a month that seemed like 100 years of suffering,

I only received criticism and to the point of avoiding answering my calls, who knows why!

It really is very difficult to make a decision like this: coward? Perhaps many think so; However, to know what it feels like when you thought you came to support and make things right, you find that such support had been just a cliché...

I think I have fulfilled my goals and desires in this life that received me for 64 years. I just want to tell all my friends that after this, continue to maintain the image with which they met me

I have a beautiful family of calm, humble and simple people. Aware of their reality and always and always seeking to do good to their neighbor

I am so sorry to leave them... it costs me enormously but I believe that the decision made is God's will, for me.

To my colleagues and also to those I only knew by chance in life, please understand how sad and stormy my life has become! to the point that it is impossible to continue...

My three beautiful children, the great LUCAS, who I have no doubt, will always continue to be the best, because he was born the best and he will never lose that...

Vicky, her “mabu”, will continue to be so dedicated and dedicated to her children and to Luquitas.

My parents whom I love very much; but I must leave them... and my partner who was with me through thick and thin, may God always take care of them...

God has the exact times in your life, and this is mine.

Dear brothers, I will not make you suffer anymore, goodbye.

I'm just a little ahead...

Rainy Saturday..."

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — The trustee of a bankrupt bank in Bolivia who died after falling from the 15th floor of an office building killed himself, a forensic investigation concluded Wednesday, in a case that has gripped Bolivia amid speculation over whether he jumped or was pushed. But instead of settling the matter, the finding generated fresh demands for an independent investigation into the death of Carlos Alberto Colodro.

Government Minister Carlos Eduardo del Castillo insisted to reporters that authorities “have investigated all hypotheses and have scientifically and technically demonstrated that the death of Carlos Alberto Colodro was a suicide.” He added: “The cameras show Mr. Colodro entering the 15th floor completely alone.”

But relatives of Colodro, who was found dead Saturday, dismissed the investigation’s conclusions and continued to insist he was the victim of foul play. They have been joined by two former Bolivian presidents in their demand for an impartial investigation into the death.

The government’s investigation was “hasty and not corroborated with the relatives, who were not even questioned for the investigation,” said Jorge Valda, the lawyer representing Colodro’s family. Valda has said Colodro suffered injuries that appeared to be inconsistent with the fall.
