New York City mayor heads to Latin America with message for asylum seekers: ‘We are at capacity’

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday said he will travel to Latin America to discourage people from seeking asylum in the city as it struggles to handle a massive influx of migrants that have overwhelmed its shelter system and strained financial resources.

The Democratic mayor is set to visit Mexico, Ecuador and Colombia during a four-day trip this week. The city has absorbed almost 120,000 migrants over the past year, with hundreds still arriving daily in need of housing and employment.

“We want to give an honest assessment of what we are experiencing here in this city,” said Adams. “We are at capacity.”

“We’re going to tell them that coming to New York doesn’t mean you’re going to stay in a five-star hotel. It doesn’t mean that, the mere fact that you come here, you automatically are going to be allowed to work,” he said.

The people, from the very poorest to top government legislators, are making $ hand over fist in the business of assisting those who want to get to the US.

I suppose he’ll get a nice vacation out of it!

the state is losing residents. I would think the metro NYC area - over 20,000,000 people strong- could absorb some more people in light of the states recent population losses. Its a half of one percent increase.

Census: New York saw steepest population decline in the last year

New York continues to lead the country in population loss and outmigration, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Empire State saw the largest annual numeric and percent decline in its population between July 2021 and July 2022, dropping by 180,341 people. Overall, that's a 0.9% decrease in people living in New York, the bureau reported.

Net domestic migration accounted for much of the decline in the state's population, with New York losing 299,557 to other states.

New York in the last two years has seen a sharp drop in its population, losing more than 400,000 people during that time.

The state has for generations struggled to retain residents to other states, a trend that worries the business community.

"The continuation of the Empire State Exodus is a crisis that demands immediate attention and action," said Justin Wilcox, the executive director of Upstate United, a pro-business organization. "This troubling trend will continue until Governor Hochul and legislative leaders enact meaningful tax relief and pro-growth reforms. We need to get our economy moving – not our people."

Population decline can have political ramifications, too. The state is set to lose a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives after New York's population did not grow as fast as many other states.

In NY the state & city budgets must be balanced, this is a hangover from when the GOP controlled the state and might be part of the state constitution from longer back. I think it was done to prevent social gains back when union organizing was strong. NYC has a tax on the New York Stock exchange transactions that always get waived and were refunded the one or two years they were collected. Now that is moot with some many digital exchanges but is an example how NY has a tax system which the wealthy can game.
