the most common expression here was actually "spades" so I'm surprised they used the one mentioned anyway. To the best of my knowledge the N was still in use in the USA then.

The actual issue is that of giving words power beyond their original intent and meaning. The N word , in this case , was originally simply descriptive of someone from Niger in the late 1700's. It got subverted somehow.

Its like faggot : over here we just eat them.
