men are not doing so great compared to women.
If you were to take the same disparity in suicides, work fatalities, life expectancy, highschool/college graduation rates, homelessness, drug abuse, incarceration, untreated mental disorders, disparity in criminal sentencing, etc etc etc and flip it around (so for instance if 4 times as many women killed themselves as men, or women represented 96% of workplace fatalities) we would dedicate endless resources towards fixing that problem.
You would literally never hear the end of it. Professional male athletes would alter their uniform to show support for women's suicide prevention. Entire months would be dedicated towards identifying young women at risk and getting them the help they needed. We'd dedicate large portions of our time in public schools towards lecturing on such issues.
But since it's *just* men . . . meh.
Man up and deal with it.
Because quite literally men are seen as disposable. A man would be berated for not risking his life to save his wife/girlfriend. A woman would not be questioned if she fled and left her husband to die. A man will be criticized for not running in to a fire to rescue a woman. A woman would never be harassed for placing her life as more valuable than someone else's. Men must never hit women, women are free to hit men as much as they like. If a man kills his wife we'll execute him. If a woman kills her husband we crack jokes and give her mental health care.
Equality would mean that the woman who ran over her husband recently because he didn't vote for Romney would be treated as an abusive spouse rather than a punchline and would be charged with attempted murder rather than domestic violence (would a man who tried to murder his wife get such a light charge? Obviously not).
Equality would mean that headlines like "112 people killed in the latest terrorist attack, including 4 women" would not exist.
Equality would mean that we dedicate the same funds to men's issues as we do to women. Instead there is a public outcry if a pittance is redirected from women's issues to men's.
Equality would mean prostate cancer, which kills roughly as many men as breast cancer, would receive the same attention and female athletes would wear ribbons to commemorate that (how many even know the color for prostate cancer awareness without looking?).
Equality would mean that when boys started graduating at lower rates than girls we cancelled all special educational incentives for girls and redirected them to boys. Rather than maintaining or increasing the financial incentives intended to help girls graduate.
Believe me: true equality would be a huge step down for women. It would mean a few more women get to be in the 1%. And that would benefit the average woman as much as the president having a penis benefits the average man: not at all. It would mean that the vast majority are subject to harsher penalties, fewer social services, and a shorter life span. That would be the direct impact of equality on the majority of women.
/by the way: that disparity, between men and women, on all those stats I listed is far greater than the disparity between whites and blacks on those metrics. Would anyone claim blacks are a privileged class in the US?
