According to a June, 1972, Gallup poll, a majority (56 percent) of American Roman Catholics who were interviewed agreed with the statement, "The decision to have an abortion should be made solely by a woman and her physician." Yet the U.S. Catholic Conference in the spring of 1972 denounced the President's Commission on Population Growth recommendation for easing abortion prohibitions. In the same Gallup poll, 68 percent of Catholics interviewed supported the idea of providing birth control services and information to teen-agers.
