GRAND ISLAND, Neb. The newly created union at the Hall County Jail has filed a complaint with the Nebraska Commission of Industrial Relations because the county no longer allows union dues to be deducted automatically from members paychecks.
More than 70 Hall County Jail staff had been represented for decades by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 293. In August, members voted to switch to Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 78. The county withdrew the dues checkoff in September, said FOP President Mark Bonser, who is a Hall County corrections officer.
The UFCW labor contract for Hall County corrections employees expired on June 30, 2013. The FOP and county officials recently began contract negotiations.
Bonser said he understood that all provisions of the previous labor contract including a dues checkoff would remain in place until a new agreement was negotiated.
