International Nutrition will face increased scrutiny from local building officials and possibly from federal safety inspectors as it rebuilds its Omaha plant and reopens for production.

The feed-supplements manufacturing plant was the site of a Jan. 20 collapse that killed two workers and injured nine others. Federal investigators last week blamed the collapse on overloaded rooftop bins.

Because of changes in building codes since the plant first was built in the 1970s, “special inspectors” will be frequent visitors to the construction site, and city officials will make many more inspections throughout the building process than they would have 40 years ago.

In addition to the construction checks, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration will make additional inspections of its own once plant operations resume if International Nutrition remains in its Severe Violator Enforcement Program.
