Six-year old Salecia Johnson had a temper tantrum in class last week, according to her teachers at Creekside Elementary in Milledgeville, Georgia. Temper tantrums are not unusual for children at this age. However, her schools response was extraordinarythey called the police, who handcuffed her and charged her with battery, according to Change.org. Police held her for an hour before notifying her parents. The school also suspended her for the remainder of the year.
While the charges have since been dropped and Salecia has been allowed to return to school, she has been traumatized by the experience, according to her mother, who has created a Change.org petition to ensure that her arrest records are purged and to end the use of the police for minor school discipline issues.

Or maybe
School terrorized by 6 year old
The school tried to contact her mother but could not reach her. I deal with that a lot. It means Mom either didn't answer her phone or pay her phone bill. Never once in the entire time my own children were in school was there ever a day that their school wouldn't have been able to contact their father or me. Never. I can't even imagine sending my 6 year old child anywhere out of my sight knowing I could not be reached in case of an emergency.
So as the school is trying to find this mother, the child is trying to break a glass window and rips a book shelf off the wall. The principal was injured. Imagine the damage and potential injuries to her classmates while she tantrums in class. Would you want YOUR child sitting next to her?
I can not only say no I wouldn't but also that I would be angry at the school if they had NOT called the police to restrain this dangerous and out of control child.
So no, I won't sign this mother's petition. She needs to be spending her time getting counseling for her daughter and purchasing a reliable cell phone.

(794 posts)A normally well-behaved 2 year old can injure an adult just messing around and having fun, or pull down a shelf or break a window.
Maybe the kid does need counseling (if so, the mom probably does, as well).
But the school should have been able to deal with the situation. They are supposed to be professionals at dealing with kids her age. The cops are not.

(96,793 posts)They are not able to restrain children. They drill that into us from the day we step foot into the school. That's what cops are trained to do, not teachers or principals. All we can do is talk them down. And that doesn't always work. When the tantruming child becomes dangerous and injures people, it's time to call the police. That's what happened in this situation.
As I said in another discussion, if my child was in class with this one, I would want the school to keep my child safe. If that means calling the police, I would be angry if they did not call.
